Rowena Harris
B.Mus; RMT; L.Mus.A (clarinet)
Rowena Harris completed her Bachelor of Music (performance) at The University of Newcastle in 1995, studying under Kevin Murphy and Ian Cook. She then undertook Post Graduate studies in Music Therapy at the University of Technology, Sydney.
From 1996 - 2007, she resided in Wollongong. She taught clarinet, saxophone and piano at a number of schools in the Illawarra region, including the Illawarra Grammar School and the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. She also had an extensive home studio. She has taught beginners through to A.Mus.A and HSC, and many of her students have continued on to study music at a tertiary level.
As part of her teaching philosophy, Rowena believes that a good teacher must focus on the student, and give them every opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in a particular field. However, it is also important that students can see that their teacher is passionate about music, so that they feel inspired to practice and develop their skills to the best of their ability.
Rowena’s passion for music has also developed through her work as a Registered Music Therapist, where she has seen how music can affect the lives of people from all walks of life. Rowena is currently national secretary of the National Council for the Australian Music Therapy Association (the national body responsible for making decisions affecting the direction of Music Therapy in Australia).
As a performer, Rowena particularly enjoys Chamber music, and was a founding member of Quartz Clarinet Quartet, Aeolus Wind Quintet and the Pearl Ensemble.
