Robert commenced learning the trombone in his school band at the age of 12. He moved on to study under Michael Bell and Ron Prussing at the Newcastle Conservatorium, gaining his Bachelor of Music (Honours) in 2005. Robert is currently lead trombone and a founding member of Newcastle’s Civic Big Band. He has also been Principal Trombone of Gunnedah Shire Band since 1999. During this time, the band has won 4 Australian and 4 New South Wales titles. Robert was also the 2001 Australian Junior Trombone Champion.

Whilst in Newcastle, Robert developed an extensive reputation as a performer and teacher, conducting bands and teaching brass in many local schools. He has tutored at many major music camps including the Pan Pacific International Music Camp, Kia-Ora Youth Music Camp and the University of Newcastle’s Bandlink workshops. He also works extensively with the Gunnedah Shire Band’s junior band as a mentor and tutor. Robert joined the teaching staff at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium in 2006, first as a brass teacher and then as head of bands.
