Yen-Lin Catherine Sheng
Yen-Lin Catherine Sheng, was born in Taiwan. She began piano studies at the age of 5 and violin at the age of 8. She was selected to be a part of music training classes from years 7 to 12. During these years, she performed as section violinist with the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra. After completing year 12, she continued her musical studies at the University of Newcastle where she obtained her Master of Music degree. Her teacher was Elisabeth Holowell, a respected violinist and pedagogue.
Catherine has participated in master classes with Ms Alla Sharova, Dr. Susan Collins, Dr. Sam McClure and Professors John Harding; Professor Charles Castleman; Professor Ian Munro and Professor Gerald Doan. Catherine was the leader of the Newcastle University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. She was also concertmaster of the University Opera Orchestra for Riders to the Sea by Vaugh-Williams and section leader for various other operas. In 1999, she won the Valma Barker Memorial Prize for Strings.
Catherine enjoys playing and teaching all styles of music to any age group in both Newcastle and Upper Hunter Valley.
