Andrew Chubb

Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1975, Andrew Chubb is a Newcastle based pianist, composer, violinist, violist, conductor, teacher and lecturer. As a pianist, Andrew Chubb is interested in a variety of repertoire although he has taken a keen interest in performing minimalist piano works, especially those of the American composer Philip Glass. By 2006, he was the first and only Australian pianist who had publicly performed the main cycle of published solo piano works by Glass. These highly successful concerts were given at the superlative Newcastle Conservatorium Concert Hall in 2002, 2003, 2006 and the Newcastle City Hall and the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music in 2007 and Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Canada in 2008.
Also in 2007 he gave the Australian premiere of the beautiful large-scale 75min solo piano work, The Book of Sounds, by the late German composer, Hans Otte and in the same concert on the Australian made Stuart and Sons piano the World Premiere of his own recent solo piano work, Meditation at Bar Beach. In recent years, Andrew Chubb has devoted more time to composition and since 2004, has had works published by Publications by Wirripang –www.australiancomposers.com.au
In 2007, Andrew Chubb collaborated with Australian photographer Allan Chawner in a project of images and music entitled Bar Beach…Beyond the Sea which was exhibited at the Newcastle Region Art Gallery. This highly praised collaboration featured Andrew Chubb’s recent 21min solo piano work, Meditation at Bar Beach. In October 2008, Andrew Chubb toured Canada as pianist and composer including an exhibition of his collaborative work Bar Beach…Beyond the Sea at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada.
Since 1999, he has been a lecturer and teacher both at tertiary and pre-tertiary levels at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, University of Newcastle in the areas of piano, violin, viola, composition, harmony/aural studies, musicology, orchestration and the Director and teacher of the AMEB Music Craft program at Newcastle Conservatorium. He currently is the composition teacher for Year 12 students at Newcastle Grammar School. In 2001 he joined the staff at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium where he has been a teacher in piano, violin, viola, composition and Music Craft. His experience and ability as both a concert performer and teacher makes him a valuable asset to the Upper Hunter Conservatorium and Newcastle/Hunter region.
